Optimising a Care Website for Mobile Relatives

How a care website becomes mobile and accessible: large text, tappable numbers, fast load time and simple contact paths for older relatives.

When a relative searches for a care service, it rarely happens at a desk. It happens in the evening on the sofa, in the hospital waiting room or between two appointments – usually on a smartphone. This is exactly the moment that decides whether a worried daughter or a working son becomes a caller, or whether the thumb swipes on to the next website. Today around 59 percent (Statista) of global web traffic comes from mobile devices, and local searches for nearby services in particular happen predominantly on the move on a smartphone. A care website that is hard to read on a phone, loads slowly or whose phone number cannot be tapped loses precisely where the willingness to make contact is highest. This article shows how a care website becomes mobile and low-barrier – and why this decides the first contact, especially for older relatives.

Why Mobile Comes First in Care

Care is one of the most mobile search situations of all. Nobody plans a care service far in advance at the desktop. The need often arises suddenly: after a fall, a diagnosis or a discharge from hospital. In this phase relatives research on the move, with the device they are already holding. Two thirds of people in need of care, specifically 67 percent or 3.8 million people (Destatis), are cared for at home mainly by relatives – and these relatives are the mobile audience of every care website.

On top of that, search engines now treat the mobile version of a website as authoritative. Google has now completed mobile indexing for the entire web (Google Search Central), assessing virtually every page through the smartphone view. This means: how well a care website works on the smartphone influences not only the user experience but also the position in the search results. Those who are weak on mobile are found less often – a double disadvantage. How concrete local visibility results from this depends directly on the mobile quality of the page.

Thinking mobile first does not mean shrinking the desktop version. It means designing the page from the smallest screen size and only then expanding for larger devices. Content is prioritised, controls are enlarged and load times are kept consistently short. This order is crucial because it puts the most important audience – the searching relatives with the phone in hand – at the centre.

Mobile Is Not the Same as Small

A mobile care website is not a shrunken desktop page. Text, spacing and tap targets must be made for operation with the thumb. What works casually on a large screen can become a hurdle on the smartphone – and conversely, the mobile view forces a welcome clarity of content.

Older Relatives as a Real User Group

A widespread misconception is that older people are not online. The opposite is true. According to Bitkom, 98 percent (Bitkom) of 65- to 69-year-olds are on the internet, 85 percent (Bitkom) of 70- to 74-year-olds and even around 64 percent (Bitkom) of 75- to 79-year-olds. Three out of four seniors overall use the net. These people write emails, read news and search specifically for information – including on care topics for themselves or their partner.

At the same time, older people rate their own digital competence on average with the school grade 3.2 (Bitkom) and mostly wish for more support. This has a clear consequence for the design: a care website must not build hurdles. Small text, pale colours, hidden menus or multi-step click paths exclude exactly the people who are looking for help. A senior-friendly page is not a special solution but simply a well-made page – which then also benefits younger relatives.

Large, Clear Text

A base font size from 18 pixels and generous line spacing make texts readable even without reading glasses. Users can also zoom in without the layout breaking.

High Contrast

Dark text on a light background with a contrast ratio of at least 4.5 to 1 ensures that even people with limited vision can grasp every sentence.

Large Tap Targets

Buttons and links of at least 48 pixels can be hit safely with the thumb. This prevents mis-taps and frustration, especially with shaky or imprecise movements.

Tappable Numbers

The phone number as a real call link starts the conversation with one tap. A number to type out is an unnecessary hurdle on the smartphone.

Short Load Time

Lean pages without superfluous scripts load quickly even on mobile networks. Every second saved noticeably lowers the abandonment rate.

Clear menus, short paths and a recognisable next step provide orientation. Those who do not get lost stay and make contact.

Load Time Decides the Abandonment

On the smartphone, speed is not a technical luxury but a direct lever for the first contact. A widely cited analysis by Think with Google shows that 53 percent (Think with Google) of mobile visitors leave a page that takes longer than three seconds to load. If the load time rises from one to three seconds, the probability of a bounce increases by 32 percent (Think with Google); at five seconds it even climbs by 90 percent (Think with Google).

Relatives in a stressful situation in particular have neither the patience nor the nerves to wait for a sluggish page. They swipe on, often to the next care website that responds faster. For a care service this means: those who invest in load time invest directly in first contacts. Optimised images, clean code and avoiding superfluous third-party scripts are the most effective adjustments here. This technical diligence is part of well-considered maintenance and should not be left to chance.

On the smartphone, it is not the prettiest care website that wins, but the one that is there first and immediately answers the right question.

Principle from project work with care services

It is important not to understand speed as a one-off project. Images, content and functions are added over time and can slow down a page that was fast at first. A regular check of the load time keeps the care website permanently performant – just like the regular content update of the stated costs and services.

Contact Paths Within Thumb's Reach

The mobile first contact stands and falls with the reachability of the contact paths. The phone number belongs visibly in the header and must be set as a tappable link that starts the call directly. A number you first have to mark and copy into the phone app costs exactly the seconds in which determination fades. Since searches for nearby services happen predominantly on the move on a smartphone, the tappable number is not a detail but the most important button on the entire page.

People prefer different paths. Some call immediately, others would rather request a call-back or fill in a short form because they feel overwhelmed on the phone or are in the middle of the working day. A good care website offers these paths in parallel, each with a large button and clear label. The form stays lean: few mandatory fields, large input fields, a visible submit button. A permanently visible call button that follows along the edge of the screen while scrolling lowers the hurdle further. No matter how far a relative has read – the path to the call is just one thumb tap away. Such solutions work without external services and at the same time respect data protection, which is non-negotiable precisely with sensitive health data.

Caution With External Helpers

Embedded chat widgets or tracking scripts from third parties slow down the page and raise data protection questions. Especially in care, where sensitive health data is involved, contact paths should be lean and self-hosted. More speed and more data protection go hand in hand here.

Accessibility Is No Optional Extra on Mobile

Mobile optimisation and accessibility interlock. Those who build a page for small screens, large tap targets and good readability have already achieved a large part of accessibility. The need is real: a joint test of the most-visited online offerings by Aktion Mensch and partners found that 61 of 78 (Aktion Mensch) tested websites could not be operated by keyboard alone and many had insufficient contrasts or missing alternative texts. For people with visual impairments, these pages thereby became difficult or impossible to use.

In addition there is the legal dimension. With the German Accessibility Strengthening Act, which has applied since 28 June 2025, many digital offerings are obliged to be accessible. For care services this is doubly relevant because their audience relies on low-barrier operation more often than average. What is legally required coincides here with what users need anyway. In practice this means: sufficient contrasts, a logical heading structure, labelled form fields, keyboard operability and alternative texts for images. Every measure for more accessibility also improves mobile usability – and vice versa. Large tap targets, clear contrasts and a coherent structure help the visually impaired user just as much as the stressed daughter searching in the half-dark on the sofa in the evening. Those who think mobile and low-barrier together build the page right just once.
